Sunday Notes 2/25/24

Published 3 months ago • 1 min read

Here are this week's notes.

From me: About a toothache

I had a toothache as a kid. It started to bother me little by little. I didn't tell my mom because I didn't want to go to the dentist.

The pain increased and eventually, it became abscessed. I could no longer ignore it. I suffered through it on a Thanksgiving weekend because the dentist wasn't available.

The following week, it was pulled and despite antibiotics and Novocain, it was an extremely painful experience. I hyperventilated. They wouldn't let me leave until I calmed down.

Most pain is like this. It starts as something minor. Something tender or uncomfortable. But these things only get worse and cause more pain the longer we allow them to go on.

When we decide to compromise on our ideal life or accept circumstances that we once deemed unacceptable, we're kicking the can down the road.

What is something painful you should deal with now before it gets worse?

Simplicity: Am I A Minimalist Yet?

With viewing minimalism as more of a habit or practice of continually removing distractions, it means you can’t declutter your house really quickly in a day or two or delete all the apps off your phone immediately and expect everything to always be better.

Interesting: Experian 2023 Consumer Credit Review

TL;DR:

  • The average FICO score increased to 715 - + 1%
  • Average total consumer debt increased to $104,215 - +2.3%
  • Total debt service obligations remain lower than 2014 levels.
  • Credit card balances increased 10% making average overall utilization 28-30% due to increased consumer spending and lenders who are reluctant to increase credit limits.

A quote:

Public opinion is a weak tyrant compared with our own private opinion. What a man thinks of himself, that it is which determines, or rather indicates, his fate.

Lastly, a question worth pondering: How do you use money? As a tool for better living, or a measure of status?

That is it for this week's edition.

Greetings and Happy Mother's Day. Here are this week's notes. From me: On choosing reactions My writing was plagiarized this week. I couldn't believe it. This has never happened to me before. Another writer stole a summary I had written word for word. At first, I was furious. I thought about calling the guy out on Twitter. I follow him there. I've shared his work here. He has a large following. He is a popular writer and one I respect(ed). I did nothing. The thing is, for all I know, it could...

Hello and welcome to the the magnificent month of May. The trees are coming alive here in Upstate NY, and once again, we are on the cusp of another splendid summer. Here are this week's notes. From me: On wishful anticipation. A melodramatic tweet I wrote on Twitter the other day: There is no precursor to an ideal life. No free trial. It is a perilous mirage. It is happening now. We're living the real thing despite wishful anticipation. Waiting and wanting is an unknowingly slow march through...

Greetings friends. Here are this week's notes. From me: A PSA I'm writing this email, except I'm not writing at all. Instead, I am organizing the refrigerator, wiping down the outside of the stove, and going through the spice cabinet. Writers are notorious for distracting themselves with dumb tasks. My home has never been so clean. Why? Because cleaning's easier than doing the hard thing. Writing, in this case, is the hard thing. But it doesn't feel good. I know this email is more important....
